As the name suggests, palm rats live in palm trees. Thus, it’s possible that your tree is inhabited by them and encouraging them to invade your lovely landscape.
Read on to learn about the dangers of palm rats and how you can stop them from climbing your yard trees.
Are There Palm Rats In Florida?
Palm rats, also called palm tree rats, are the leading rodents in Florida. They love climbing and nesting in palm trees, hence the name. These rodents mostly feed on the fruit of the tree.
Although there are two types of palm rats, most of the time, we focus on one type. The true palm rats are the Rattus Palmarum that only live on the Nicobar Islands, in India.
Most palm rats we see here in Florida are the common roof rats, also known as tree rats or black rats. They are very good at climbing and nest readily up in the trees. These rats weigh half a pound and have smaller bodies compared to sewer rats. But you can easily confuse them with woodrats as they have a similar body size.
Are Palm Rats Dangerous And Destructive?
If you have a palm tree on your property, you could easily experience a palm rat infestation.
These rats present several dangers, including:
– Destruction of your home and other structures. Some of the materials that rodents damage include wires, wood, and insulation. Rats and other rodents are said to cause damages worth billions of dollars each year.
– Could bring flies and other small pests in the house. These not only risk your health but also that of your family and pets.
– Contaminate food supplies. Their urine and droppings pose risk to your health and have been linked to serious medical issues. Some diseases that result from eating food contaminated with rat’s urine, droppings, or saliva include pulmonary syndrome, salmonellosis, etc.
When you have rats living in your palm trees, it is just a short way for them to invade your home, too. They can get into and move around your home, causing various destructions. Just the sight of a palm rat, whether dead or alive, should tell you that there’s a problem.
There are signs that can help you figure out when your home is infested with rats. Some of them include scratching or movement sounds around your home, especially in the attic at night; their grease trails left all over your house; gnaw marks on your electrical wires, furniture, roof, or eaves; fruits with holes at home or on your trees; palm rat droppings of about half an inch long with pointed ends.
Where Do Rats Nest In Palm Trees?
These rats live in palm trees as they protect them from harsh weather elements and predators. However, they can also move to your roof and then, invade the entire house.
These rodents also love nesting in the cavities of old or dead palm trees. But it’s also common to find their nests in dead palm tree fronds and within hollow trunks. While they mostly stay above the ground, they can also make their home underground where predators can’t easily see them.
What Does A Palm Rat Nest Look Like?
You will likely spot a rat nest in parts of the palm tree that are hidden but are still near food sources.
Palm rats usually construct them with natural materials like twigs, grass, and other plant debris. They may also use other shredded materials like fabric and paper. In general, their nests have a diameter of 4-6 inches and are woven loosely.
Do All Palm Trees Attract Rats?
If you have palms in your backyard, they can attract specific rat species, namely palm rats.
Most palm trees are attractive to rats for several reasons. One is that they supply them with plenty of food. And they also offer a high perch to live in, which keeps rats safe from predators. In addition, if the tree is tall with a thick frond, it protects these rodents when it rains or during windy weather.
How To Keep Rats From Climbing Your Palm Tree?
There are some things that homeowners can do to keep these rodents at bay. These include:
– Blocking all potential entryways on your roof – this way rats will not have an easy way of accessing your home
– Removing all water sources like birdbaths and pet water dishes from your yard
– Trimming your trees and plants to prevent rats from nesting
– Cutting tree limbs that overhang your roof
